Afrique de l'Ouest
This page is dedicated to West Africa, especially the country of Sénégal, the FulBe nations, and also to the Islam. There is a strong connection between this items. With my links and sources I'm trying to go deep into the history of West Africa, especially into the culture and the language of the FulBe nations. I give also some links to today's media like radio and newspapers.

I'm writing this page in English to present it to international readers, and also because my French is too worse.

Literature:

As far as I know there is one Dictionary Pulaar-English / English-Pulaar available:

written by Dr. Mamadou Niang, published by Hippocrene Books, New York 1997

I found also a reprint of a dictionary Poular-French, published 1967 in London:

  • Henri Gaden: "Le Poular - Dialecte Peul du Fouta Sénégalais", Tome second: Lexique Poular-Francais

Originally published in Paris 1914. I only got the second book.

This book is from my point of view the best description of the history of Fuuta Tooro, written in Pulaar and in English:

  • Moustapha Kane/ David Robinson: "The Islamic Regime of Fuuta Tooro", Michigan 1984

I'm describing this unique book on a separate webpage:

Kane/Robinson

I also found unique literature in German concerning the history of the Toucouleur/FulBe:

  • Tirmiziou Diallo "Der Theokratische Fulbe-Staat Fuuta-Jaloo", doctoral thesis Freie Universitaet Berlin 1979

Other excellent books are:

B.O. Oloruntimehin described the Toucouleur Empire of Segou between 1851 and 1893:

  • B.O. Oloruntimehin "The Segu Tukulor Empire", London 1972

Yves Saint-Martin described the period from 1846 until 1893 in French:

  • Yves Saint-Martin "L'Empire Toucouleur et la France - un demi-siècle de relations diplomatiques", Dakar 1967

Regarding the FulBe Empire in Massina (Mali) Bintou Sanankoua describes the history in the 19th century in  French:

  • Bintou Sanankoua "Un empire peul au XIXe siècle - La Diina du Maasina", Paris 1990

The history of Fuuta Tooro, translated from Arabian documents:

  • Sire-Abbas-Soh (Translation and addendum by Maurice Delafosse) "Chroniques du Foûta Sénégalais", Paris 1913

African Science:

The famous Sénégalesian scientist and author Cheikh Anta Diop - who gave his name for the University of Dakar  - brought all his research together in his final book:

  • Cheikh Anta Diop "Civilization or Barbarism", English print New York 1991; original French version " Civilisation ou Barbarie", Paris 1981

Islam in Germany

Different to most translations of the Qur'an is the approach of Amir Zaidan. He wrote an explanation of Qur'an in German language, which means he translated the Suras but didn't translated a lot of Arabic words which he explained in the glossary:

  • Amir M. A. Zaidan "At-Tafsir", Offenbach/Germany 2000, ISBN 3-934659-01-2
