Bulova Companion 247 of 1955

Talking about the Ladies' choice a Bulova is always a favorite when it comes to old tube radios ;-)

From the technical point of view the Bulova companion is a 4 tube standard superhet for broadcast.

Tube complement is:

1U4 I.F.
1R5 Converter
1U5 Detector Amplifier
3V4 Power Amplifier

The condition of the little beauty was not bad. Overall the leather case was in good condition, the leather really dry after 50 years, but clean and without major faults.

Electrical the radio was as expected. Running, but humming a lot. Of course the power supply section. The selen rectifier was quiet good, but the filter caps were due to replacement. So I recaped the radio: replaced the multi-electrolytic on the chassis, and 2 paperwax caps inside. The remaining caps were ceramic and still ok. By the very rare space in the chassis forced I decided the dismount the multi-cap, put the old stuff out and placed 3 new caps inside: 2 * 47 µF 350V for the anode voltage section, and a 1.000 µF 16V for the heater supply.

The multi-electrolytic cap of the power supply got new caps inside:

Another activity was to check the tubes. I put them on my TV-7/CU and then replaced the 1R5 and the 1U5 by new one from my stock. The output transformer, mounted at the speaker, was loose, so I glued it with a Uhu Endfest again to the speaker
