Ducastel DAHG 125 (225) 1936
Pictures of the original condition (above): A long term project, started in Spring 2001, was the restauration of a French Ducastel radio from 1936. Regarding the tube complement it must be a model DAHG 125 or DAHG 225. 10 months and a couple of working hours later (below):
The Ducastel's tube complement consists of:
So it is obviously an American Design, using American pre-Octal tubes! Condition of the radio's chassis was very bad, very rusty, and nothing would work. In place of the type 75 tube an ABC1 was installed. I had a lot to do. I cleaned the chassis from all rust and made all the tuning mechanics workable. The large power supply capacitors sitting on the chassis were not reliable to me. So I opened the cans and replaced the old content with new electrolytic caps. I have partially rewired the radio and replaced all capacitors and all resistors.
Surprise: after finishing the restauration the radio started immediately to work. I did a fine tuning, replaced the grid cable of the 75 with a shielded cable. I'm really satisfied with this job. The Ducastel is now receiving on all 3 bands, and working really good on standard broadcast. The wooden case was sanded and got a new painting. One of the original knobs was missing and it was impossible to get an identical spare knob. But at Fairradio I found black knobs with a design close enough so I decided to take 3 new ones. Now the radio is back in daily service. Photos of the finished job:
I've found a schematic of a Ducastel radio from 1937. This has the newer Octal tubes, but it is very similar to the older model with UX-base tubes: Ducastel_302 (124k)
