Build in the mid-50ies by Sears-Roebuck, the Silvertone Wayfarer is a 4-band Portable Radio. The cabinet is a bit smaller compared to a standard Zenith Trans-Oceanic cabinet. This Radio is one of the so-called "Trans-Oceanic clones": some companies tried to sell competitive radios, but they didn't earned Zenith's success. I believe this was just due to the circumstance the market segment was already coverey by Zenith. Silvertone Wayfarer 8224 |

| The Sears-Roebuck 8224 is a
4-Band receiver for Navigation/Marine Band, Standard Broadcast and
Shortwave. I guess the Radio shares some technical details with
Hallicrafters' TW-500.
With a different brown fabric the same Radio has the number 7224. The radio is build for operating on 117VAC or VDC or from batteries. Rectification is done by a Selen rectifier. The tube complement is a "typical" Trans-Oceanic-Clone, using the same tubes:
I wasn't yet able to get a schematic and tube alignement details for this radio, but I did a digital foto of the schematic which is glued into the cabinet. The quality is still poor, but it is better than nothing (.gif 455k): Sears-Roebuck 8224 Actually the Radio is parking in my project queue. The manufacturer's inspection tag is telling it was build in 1958. I got it for $ 22 on eBay. Overall condition is not bad. The tuning belt was off, and it had a cut in the frontside face covering the loudspeaker. Nothing to make headaches ;-) The tuning belt required some try-any-error action and then it worked. As expected the Selen rectifier was not good; in earlier years somebody had used a diode soldered over the rectifier. I replaced both with an NOS AEG Selen rectifier rated 125V 130mA, which works pretty good.
