Radio Star Starlet of 1949

The fun I had with the Radio Star Starlet 30 forced me to look for another one. This little thing is a "Starlet", the dial scale is the old one before Copenhagen 1950, so it is the model "Starlet" of 1949. The case is made from steel and covered with brown leather.

The Starlet has 4 bands (short wave is spread in 2 bands):

GO (grandes ondes) long wave 1.150 - 2.000 m
PO (petites ondes)  medium wave 175 - 590 m
OC 1 (ondes courtes)  short wave 16 - 27 m
OC 2 (ondes courtes) short wave 28 - 51 m

The Starlet is using Rimlock tubes:

  heater voltage
UCH41 14V Oscillator
HF121 ( = UF41 )
12.6V
I.F.
D121 ( = UAF41 )
12.6V
A.F.
UL41 45V Power Amplifier
UY41 31V Rectifier

Condition of this radio was - as usual for a Starlet - bad. Equipped with 5 tubes heated by line voltage the heat conditions in the small metal case is horrible, so the life of the capacitors is dramatically decreased. Interesting enough the chassis is totally different from the Starlet 30 chassis. So all the caps and some of the resistors were replaced.

Initial condition: top view of case and chassis. Both big power supply electrolytics are really cooked.

After restoration: side view of chassis. From left: variable cap, RF-filter unit, UAF41 tube, and at the right side UL41

Heavily damaged speaker (right of it is UCH41) restored with pieces of thick paper:
